If it were up to me, I would personally choose a more momentum-based playstyle, as it harkens back to Sonic's roots, as well as being more accessible and easier to master, and is much more versatile than the Boost gameplay when it comes to adding good gimmicks. Only after that can they add gimmicks to that base, and they need to make sure that gimmick compliments the base playstyle. What they need to do is create a playstyle or bring back a previous playstyle (be it Adventure style or Boost) and stick with it, tweak it as best they can, and establish that playstyle as the base gameplay. Not to mention when they do add gimmicks, it sometimes doesn't compliment the base playstyle at all, unlike Mario's gimmicks. Sonic's problem is that his base gameplay keeps changing since Sega and Sonic Team can't seem to stick with a single playstyle.
